Finding Imperfection

wabisabi-AustraliaThere’s an old adage that states the more closely you study the things that man has done, the more imperfection you will find. Conversely, the more closely you study the things that God has done, the more perfection you will find. Every sculpture, every masterpiece has its flaws, but have you ever inspected a snowflake, a leaf, the detail in the human body? The deeper you delve more and more the detailed perfection will be found. Thus, in our dealings with God as spiritual beings whose treasure is found in earthen vessels, why do we spend so much time focusing in on all of our imperfections? Why do we allow ourselves to be convinced of our every flaw and human frailty when we as humans are fundamentally imperfect? Ever since that fateful day when sin and corruption entered into God’s creation, men and women have begun life with a sin nature in their blood. No amount of good behavior escapes that reality. Try as we may, we cannot perfect that which is imperfect. Instead our task, though it be only known by very few individuals, is to accept God’s perfection in place of our own attempts at gaining it. Have you been obsessed with finding your imperfections? Is your focus of life centered on your own imperfections? Does your relationship with God suffer because of your preoccupation with sin? Have you been deceived into finding imperfections?

It is always ironic to me that the people who care most about what God thinks and are concerned with what God says is right are often the same ones seeking to find perfection in their imperfections. They work themselves over unmercifully feeling bad about this and guilty over that. All enjoyments God lavishly provided for his precious creation are viewed in a bad light with constant threats of potential excess, bad motives and generalized warnings about how things will get you. There is no fun in their fun. There is no ability to relax and be at peace because doing so will surely lead to disaster. They spend today lamenting yesterday’s missteps and in doing so, miss today. They are risk averse and think breaking any rule will lead to unmanageable consequences. They are in effect prisoners to sin and the consequences of sin. The harder they work to overcome sin, the more susceptible to sin they become. They are forever upset with themselves for some potential violation with the result that heaven’s brass. Add to that a vocal world proclaiming a never ending list of requirements to please God. In this we are deceived in trying to make our imperfection into perfection.

Though the whole world would disagree, God’s plan for mankind was never that he should live this way. It is not pleasing to God spending your days mired in guilt for your mistakes and your foibles. God is well aware of your imperfection and as such devised a new plan to forever free you from this way of thinking. You cannot earn your way into God’s righteousness no matter how hard you work. Sin nature is in your blood. Howbeit many still work hard at this endeavor to their own misery and lack of fulfillment. You cannot make your imperfection perfect. God makes your imperfection perfect in the life of His son Jesus Christ. Jesus lived God’s Word perfectly so that you and I would not have to try. He was a perfect man and he never sinned. He came into the world with sinless blood and by the sacrifice of his blood we have been made forever righteous in God’s sight. The perfect for the imperfect. Once we believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and that God raised him from the dead, we receive God’s spirit inside of us and from that day forward cannot sin in God’s sight. This was God’s plan to save man from himself. By doing this God set us free from the claims of sin and wrong. Every time we insist that we know more than God and persist in remembering and rehearsing our misdeeds, we deny what God did for us in Christ. None of us like to make mistakes or do things that are not right, but as imperfect creatures it is going to happen to all of us. In this God forever solved our dilemma by introducing the perfect for the imperfect. He made a way for us to prevail by relying on the works of another man. That is grace and that is God’s love for us.

There’s more to the dastardly practice of focusing on our imperfections rather than focusing on God’s perfection. The one behind those persistent painful reminders, those dreadful accusations, the guilt and every condemnation is the devil, the enemy of God’s people. He knows that if he can turn your focus away from God and onto yourself, you will fail every time. If he can get you to look away from God and hone in on your own human imperfection you will lose the fight. You will not have confidence in God to be all that He said He would be for you because you have sin-consciousness. Jesus died once and for all to deliver us from sin-consciousness. Jesus Christ’s sacrifice removed the devil’s authority over our lives. But, if we don’t know this or worse don’t believe it then we will be forever bound by sin and the claims of sin. We will spend our days lamenting sins long past and in short reducing our expectations for a happy, healthy. prosperous life. We will feel as if we deserve sickness and struggles because we just don’t measure up. But in this we are being deceived. What God did He did once and for all who will believe. Jesus wouldn’t be a very good Savior if you and I still had to save ourselves. Sin, guilt and condemnation do not come from God. They come from the devil.

All of us in this life will be challenged by this reality. All of us at one time or another will be talked out of God’s goodness toward us, His perfection, His willingness to do for us what we could never do for ourselves. Indeed the whole quest of man is centered around believing God to do for us what we could not do for ourselves. Every time it becomes about you, what you are doing and what you are not doing, you have fallen off track. God’s goodness towards you is not based on what you do or don’t do, it is based on His unconditional love, mercy and grace. We receive God’s blessings when we believe what He says and He says all throughout the Bible our redemption would come via the life of His son. You ain’t going to get there on your own folks. You cannot earn it no matter how good you endeavor to be. So give yourself a much needed break. Quit focusing on your humanity, your imperfections, your absurdities. Stop looking at that which can never be made perfect and look toward His perfection. Relax and enjoy your life and your fun. Stop second guessing your every move and motive. You are not the evil one, on the contrary you are the good one. God knows you love Him and He knows you care about what He thinks. He already knows your heart. If He can look past your imperfections in the life of His son then you can also. Stop finding imperfection. Find His perfection instead.

The Great Christian Killer…

If the greatest thing the devil ever did was to convince people he didn’t exist, the second greatest thing was convincing people they needed to work in order to earn God’s approval. When I look around at Christianity today (so called), all I can see are people living in and living out their unworthiness before the Father. Even the mention of Christianity today elicits an immediate twinge of negative self-analysis as if the word christian is synonymous with moral failure in some capacity. For believers, it seems, it’s not so much about God and His goodness as it is about everything they don’t do right; where they struggle and ultimately what is wrong with them! The world lives and thrives on what isn’t right concerning people coupled with so-called solutions that always lead to control! In this way, the system of things is designed to talk people into doing the works required for approval from men and ultimately from God. This is the great Christian killer!

The roots of this dilemma go all the way back to Adam and Eve, who when questioned by God regarding their error, immediately filled with fear (a first for humans) and sought a covering for what they had done wrong. And people are being assaulted with the same error and accusation to this very day. When sin entered the world, man would henceforth be born into the world dead in trespasses in sins, not by their choices, but rather by their inherited bloodline. Natural man is born with sin in his blood. To think, based on this reality, that you as a person could somehow earn God’s goodness is the height of deception. You, by your human efforts, could never get the job done fully. It took God’s intervention by supplying a perfect substitute for man’s evil nature in the life, death and resurrection of his sinless son. In that substitution, you and I by believing in God’s son and his being raised from the dead, received the gift of righteousness forever more. God, in His infinite grace and mercy did away with the need for you to do works in order to gain His approval. But, that is not how Christians live. The proof is found in their insistence on adding something to what God finished for them already. When Jesus hung on the cross dying and uttered, “It is finished” he meant it! He ended forever all that was ever wrong with you and me. He paid the price so you wouldn’t have to pay anymore. So why are you still making payments? Why do you act as if the work isn’t completed already? I’ll tell you why! It is because you have been deceived into thinking otherwise. Oh you didn’t get there alone and neither did I. The world and preachers and religious leaders have all been cooperators together in ignorance in endeavoring to add to God’s perfection by insisting on certain behaviors and rules and dogmas and commandments and so-called morality with one hidden, spurious and deceptive element, namely to bring you under their (or its) control! Convince a man he is not right before God and you can now control his entire life by prescribing what he must do in order to “get right!” In this way, everything is wrong, everything is evil and everything is going to get you. You cannot enjoy life, make decisions, make mistakes or anything else because all of it brings God’s disapproval. How many people do you know who live this way? Maybe you have been living this way?

I often marvel at how people cannot seem to understand how well God knows His creation. They somehow think God shudders at all of the awful things people consider and sometimes do! Let me let you in on a little secret. God understands fully the human condition, after all He made us. Do you really think you could freak God out because of some deception that befell you or by some wrong path you took or take? God not only knows you intimately, but He also knows the spiritual evil you contend with though maybe you never understood it for yourself. And similarly, isn’t it possible that all of the things you do as a human are actually what humans do and not really sin at all? Religion is fraught with a litany of things that are wrong before God, not because God said so, but because people said so! People endeavor to live under Old Testament law that was not even written to them to do. And even those to whom it was actually written could not live it to the end it was called the curse of the law. Its purpose was not to reform men, though if anything could accomplish it, it was the law, but rather it was to identify sin clearly with the coming promise of a Savior who would live it perfectly and forever redeem mankind. Jesus Christ came to set you free. His aim, indeed God’s aim was to make a way for you to live freely and without obligation in any capacity. Forced and compelled love is not love. God wants to be your Father and care for you like any Father would, however without limitations. God is not condemning you, convicting you or accusing you. He does not bring up your errors and missteps. He loves you into finally loving yourself, not because you do it all right, but because He does it all right in love! You’ll never walk with God to the full capacity and joy He intends for you until you finally get past this obstacle. God is not angry with you, that is what people say. God is not teaching you lessons with evil (shudder) to make you do things right, that is what people say. Negative events that happen to you are not because of something God did (ever), that is what people say. The guilt you experience, the condemnation you feel, the remembrance of past mistakes that haunt you, the disapproval, the shame, the fear, the worry is not from God! They all stem from the same one that endeavors to convince you that he does not exist!

I offer these truths not to condemn your religion or the multitude of well meaning people involved with it. I write this because this is what God’s Word says. You are not a lowly worm, you are a son of the most high God, not by any works that you have done, but because of everything God did for you. Change your focus away from yourself and your imperfections (though they be many) and move them over to God’s perfection. In God’s sight you are now and forever more sinless because of the accomplishments of His son. So, stop dwelling on yourself, feeling sorry for yourself and lamenting your imperfection. God isn’t judging you so stop judging yourself. Get in agreement with God in what He said He did for you and let all that garbage go. It’s not noble or an indicator of humility, it is clinging to error; error that seeks only to control you. Imagine how fun life could be for you if you were truly free from all obligations and compulsions. Imagine how great life could be with God as your Father seeing only the completed works of His son in you. You only have one short go round in this thing and God wants you to enjoy it. Quit worrying about sin, God settled that issue for you forever. Nothing you do can separate you from the love of God, so what is there to be afraid of? Get out there and live Christians! God needs your heartfelt contributions. Overcome the Christian killer with good. (God’s kind of good!)

Real Life…Keep Your Head Up!

inward-to-upwardOver the years, I’ve been up on the mountaintops of life and down in the valleys. I have experienced joy unspeakable and heavy duty agitation. And while God has never failed in His goodness towards me, I have often forgotten the secret to living real life with God. Interestingly, the difficult, frustrating times have always seemed to follow a distinct pattern whereby my focus shifts (or gets shifted) away from God and His goodness back to myself and all of my inadequacies. In light of this dilemma, I offer this beautiful work called, “The Secret to a Holy Life.”

The secret to a holy life is to get your eyes off your own inadequacies and onto the Father and His glory.

Our service is first and foremost to God and with God, not always to man.

To walk worthily is to walk with thanksgiving to God first and foremost.

The secret to a holy life is not the labour we do but just to love Him first and foremost.

Then the work we do is not to be well pleasing to Him but because we already are!

~ Dr. Victor Paul Wierwille

Religion persists in getting man to focus on his sins and shortcomings under the guise of helping him to live a better life. It is rife with judgment and an ever growing list of labels identifying good an bad… The focus is always about people and their behavior. And, if you have been a person long enough you are well aware that your behavior sucks at times. Since your heart wants to do what is “right” you chastise yourself and berate yourself with demands to get better and do better! Perhaps you need more discipline! Maybe you just need to work harder; get stronger; purify yourself more; stop doing this and start doing that. Maybe you are just evil! Maybe God is very upset with you! Maybe… The not so obvious problem with this line of thinking is that it drives you further and further away from God and the “real” life He has given you. It subtly turns your focus inward, not upward. Life basically becomes about you. Welcome to the deep valleys and the strangling agitation.

Try as you may, focusing on what you do “wrong” (so called) will never, ever get you to what is “right.” Again.. Focusing on what you “think” you do wrong, will never get you to what you “think” is right! You see, the issue isn’t really about doing right and doing wrong, the issue is about your focus and who/what is number one in your life. Religion has convinced us that a relationship with God is all about doing what’s right. The problem with that logic is figuring out what is “right.” One group says you can’t smoke. Another says you can’t do frontal hugs until you’re married (thanks Duggars). The enemy makes a clever appeal to our ego by promising us that we can do something to make God do something. In reality, we never have to make God do anything as He is already everything we could ever want. And to take it a step further, God sent His son to pay the full price for everything you and I ever did wrong, so we would never have to try and pay that price ourselves again!

Let’s say you had a child that continued to misbehave (according to what you thought was right). You scolded him, chastised him, threatened him, took things away from him and grounded him. Did those behaviors on your part make him do right? Of course not! If anything he simply did what it seemed like you wanted until the trouble stopped. Real change in a child only happens when the child chooses his own behavior without compulsion from others. It’s no different for us adults. We can modify our behavior; exercise discipline and everything else when it comes from a heart that is choosing freely without compulsion. God has done that for us. He has completely set us free in every regard so that we could truly be free to choose right. You get it? Free is free. No law is no law. Nothing you could ever do or not do will change God’s opinion of you! Nothing.

So the secret to real life is to get off your own back and stop making life and happiness all about what you do. Stop looking at your imperfection and focus on God’s perfection instead. Serve God not by clinging to approved behaviors, but by cleaving to God’s love for you and your love for Him. Thank Him for making you worthy no matter what the whole world says to the contrary. Then, you’ll find that you no longer have to work to earn His love and blessings, but will do what you do because you’re well pleasing to Him already!

True life; real life was never about choosing all the right behaviors to stand approved before men. Instead it’s about choosing to keep God first and foremost in your heart and life. Take a deep breath and let go of all that work and stress and anxiety you’ve amassed killing yourself to earn God’s love and protection and safety and a good life. Relax and breathe in the pure reality that He already gave all of that to you!

You are just fine, just the way you are…
