Religion And God (Are they the same thing?)

Let me begin by saying I’m not trying to bash your religion or the things you hold most sacred. I’m not making a case for one religion above another religion. I’m not saying everything your religion has taught you is wrong. Instead, I’m asking you a question; a question that may spell the difference between happiness and freedom and misery and obligation. Are you sure the things you do and say in the name of God are in alignment with what God says about Himself and your relationship with Him? Are your religious beliefs and your belief in God the same thing?

In my experience, religious people seem to be the most unhappy people on earth. They live and move and have their being ever fraught with some nagging sense of disapproval from a god whose requirements they can never live up to. They are guilty and condemned, always apologizing, always wrong, always convinced that what they do and say is inadequate and fails to measure up. They endeavor to live an impossible code with pleasures perpetually questioned and good times requiring caution. They sincerely love God but they conclude God doesn’t love them. They are compelled to answer every accusation. Their motives are constantly under the microscope. In short, the people who should be the most blessed are often the least blessed with even the unbeliever outpacing their achievements. Yet, they love the God of all blessings. How can this be?

The problem is found in not understanding the things that are important to God versus the things that are important to men. Religion’s aim and focus is always man and what man does and what man doesn’t do or that he shouldn’t do. Religion’s promise is the glorification of man’s acts and man’s experiences. In religion, men judge other men based on their behaviors and pronounce one man righteous and another man sinful. Religion seeks to elevate some and reduce the others. Religion is hard, damn hard! Religion teaches people to doubt themselves in favor of another’s opinion. Religion smacks at the heart of God because it is not based on what God says. Instead it is based upon the doctrines and commandments of men. God provides a good way to live and religion adds to that good way by introducing requirements that God never intended. Religion puts burdens on men’s shoulders. There is no love in obligation. That which you do that you do not want to do becomes a compulsion from which no-one gets blessed. Giving without love as its motive becomes religious duty where I scratch your back in the hopes that you will scratch mine. It’s an exchange wherein you now owe me something. For centuries, men have engaged themselves in rituals and observances that make no sense to them. Yet, they continue in them despite it.

I say these things not to anger you, but rather to ask you to think for yourself. If doing God’s will is so miserable, then wouldn’t that make God miserable (God forbid!). Do you really believe that God is bland and rigid and narrow? Would it make sense for Him to be opposed to enjoyments that He invented the capacity to enjoy? Could He, being all-knowing, be illogical or whimsical? Would He ask you to believe in something you could not understand, or worse try to make good things out of evil events? Our problem, our failure is in discounting our human logic in terms of common sense. Would someone that reportedly loved me at the same time torture me or confuse me or punish me? Would He do inexplicable horrors to me and my family for some reason I can’t yet understand? You see, it’s not God who told us these things, it’s religion. Religion requests that we suspend our common sense in favor of so-called higher spiritual realities. Religion begs us not to think at all. In this way, religion controls and limits our experience of life. Men and women are herded together on paths leading to failure and loss. When something bad happens to someone, religion points that wrong back at man and how man is living or not living. Pretty soon you become responsible for all of the evils in your life instead of the true cause of your unhappiness and loss. Religion sucks man and I feel sorry for anyone who has gotten sucked into it.

In stark contrast, the things of God make perfect sense. The things of God aren’t opposed to science, they are the forerunner to science. Someone made this world with all of its detail and symmetry. Someone invented the concept of love and forgiveness and kindness. Someone dreamed up the notion of human beings. Do you think you can surprise or shock God with your behaviors and the things you come up with? Is that sexual desire that God built into you really evil or just wrongly expressed? You see, religion gives God a bad rap. It turns Him into something silly and capricious. It makes Him impossible to please and not a loving Father at all. It turns your focus away from the God who alone can deliver you and places it back on yourself where you by yourself are powerless to do anything about your difficulties.

I offer these words in the hopes you can hear what I’m saying and be set free. All of those burdens you are living under; all of that guilt and condemnation; all of that focus on your own imperfection and weakness is not God’s will at all. Instead He asks only that you turn your focus towards Him. Don’t suspend your logic, use your logic! Maybe all that super hard work you have been doing to get to heaven isn’t a requirement to get into heaven at all. Maybe all of that denial of self and pleasure and fun wasn’t something God said, but instead something that people say. What good is a Savior if you still have to save yourself? Why would Jesus have paid for your sins if you still needed to make a payment? The ways of God, the true ways of God never hurt but only help you. God is a Father and no-one loves His children more than Him… You can escape the bondage of religion if you want to and it starts and ends with God. Is religion and its dictates the same as a relationship with God? God forbid…

I love you.

Your Dream Life…

dream-life-text-Favim.com-354813As I sat on my porch this morning, sipping my coffee and reveling in the beautiful sunlit morning, I thought how incredibly privileged and blessed we are to be able to live any life we desire by first envisioning it, then deeply considering it in our minds and hearts. God has given us the complete and absolute freedom to dream and then bring those dreams into reality. Every person living their dream life lived it first in their own mind. The question isn’t whether or not you can still live your dream life. The question is have you taken the time and effort to even know what your dream life is and can you see it in your own mind.

One of the hardest things for people to understand is how intimately connected their present situation is to the thoughts they think most habitually. Your struggles, your pain, your difficulties are not found in unfair circumstances, poor upbringing, other people’s influence or unexpected events, but rather found primarily in your own thinking patterns and then brought into your reality by your unknowing persistence with those thoughts. In the precise same manner, your dreams, your visions of how you want to live, your ideal life, all await your thoughts to come in line with your expectations. The things that mean the most to you, you likely have already obtained in some capacity. Yet however good your life may appear, the “natural” tendency is to limit and compromise, as if God had a limited supply of good and there was the possibility of having more than your fair share. Goodness, blessings, success are not meted out and divided between people, but instead follow with perfect accuracy the believing and expectation of your heart. Those who enjoy more, positively believe more. Those who enjoy less, negatively believe (fear) more.

Many times people compromise their dream life by the limited value they place upon themselves. They treat others with respect, but don’t respect themselves. They admire the work of others, but see no value in their own work. They understand how others can live such a fantastic life, but cannot see themselves living a fantastic life because of “_______________” ~ you fill in the blank! I can assure you, your dream life isn’t based upon how good or bad you are, it is based upon your expectations for yourself. And you control your expectations! Hiding behind the fear of people finding out who you really are is nothing more than evidence that you have been talked out of your own self-worth. Anyone living a mediocre existence does so because that is their expectation, despite their heartfelt cries to the contrary.

The dream life isn’t found by treating it like a giant wheel of fortune, whereby if you can get lucky enough to have a few spins, you can win the life you want. Nor is it a lottery ticket producing an unexpected, life changing windfall. It sounds silly, but many folks approach their life this way. Ignorant of their responsibility to choose and shape their lives, they sort of float around in neutral hoping not to hit anything along the way. They drift into destinations they “didn’t” choose and complain like hell about being there. If you’ve never had a goal or an aspiration for something better than you have, how could you reasonably expect something better? Or, if your targets are so low they take no effort on your part to achieve, then don’t wonder why there are a million others living just like you are, unfulfilled. Everyone knows there are no fish left in the local fishing hole, but if you commit to a longer drive, they are there in abundance. Your dream life won’t just happen to you or show up one day. Instead it will arrive in smaller pieces, evolving as you evolve your thinking and act upon your most important visions for yourself. Your arrival at your dream life won’t come as surprise to you, but instead will be in full alignment with your expectations and the most natural thing in the world!

When you take away all of the facades and apparent complications of life; when you remove all of the distractions and time stealers; when you get back to approaching this life in its purest essence, you will begin to discover that you had access to the remedy within your heart all along. God didn’t give you life with the intention that you would hobble and struggle and limp along the way, hoping to accidentally stumble upon something good. Instead He gave you a mind and a heart from where your believing emanates with the real intention that you would learn who He is and what He has already provided for you. His desire is that you would learn how to control your thinking and guard your heart from where your entire life flows forth. He wants you to know the score!

You have been given the greatest possible privilege to ensure your life is filled with blessings. You can learn how to believe rightly and get to that dream life you have been dreaming about. It’s right here waiting for you. Make time to vividly picture the life you want, not the life you don’t want, and see how amazing and life altering is this glorious, true way to live!  I would expect nothing less from God who is only good, always! Would you?

Discover the Meaning…of Life

above_clouds-780x520When my grandson, ‘Braylon Breeches’ was younger, he would come with the family for a visit. And, being a child at heart, I knew what he liked. I would grab the shovel from the garage and announce, “Hey Breeches, let’s go to the garden and find stuff!” So, we’d head outside to the garden and I would dig down into the dirt. And, what did we find? Well, we weren’t looking for anything in particular, but we both knew what joy would be found in our discoveries. We found rolly pollys, worms, spiders, bulbs, roots you name it. We didn’t find something we were looking for, we found whatever was there…

As I reflect back on our precious grandson-grandpa time together, I can’t help but recognize the lesson we found in the dirt. Life is discovered in discovery. The joy of living isn’t in what you already know, it’s in discovering what you don’t know. Everything God has done has a meaning and a point and a purpose. Absent any meaning, life becomes a drudgery; a perpetual passing of time; a gameshow replayed out over a lifetime. The meaning of life is found in the meaning. And just like my favorite discoverer and I found out, you don’t know what you are going to find until you start looking!

The trouble with adulthood isn’t in getting older, it’s when by habitual repetition, you stop looking for the rolly pollys; when you think you already know what’s out there; when you give up on finding something new. As you sit there immersed in the conundrum of the meaning of life, ask yourself, are you still looking for the answer? If you seek, you’re going to find, but only if you persist in the seeking. Your full-time adult responsibility isn’t just to work at your job, it’s to work at discovering the meaning behind things. The clues are all around you. Don’t let a scientist or a theory or a so-called educated person talk you into surrendering your pursuit. Do not settle for a meaningless existence or accept that you are here at this moment in time via some random expression of nature or evolution. Both of those things are real, but they’re only the surface of the garden. The treasure is down a little deeper.

Life isn’t happenstance or random (sound familiar?). There’s supposed to be a point to it. How sad it must be to be persuaded that there is no greater purpose and that you, through some cosmic magic, are just here to live out 70 or 80 years, acquire as much stuff as you can and then die. How tragic! Life, your life, is a helluva lot more than just the here and now. But, the here and now is important! We’ve all been cast in a drama of epic proportions. The storyline is familiar; good versus evil. We all have an assigned role, but the character in that role is of our own choosing. We’re supposed to be the starring role, but ignorance regarding our greater purpose renders us extras, bumbling about in the background, without any lines! It’s high time that you find out your starring role.

Finding meaning is like finding anything, you have to be willing to look. Stop simply accepting everything that happens to you and start seeking to understand why. Are you winning? Great, why is that? Are you getting your butt kicked? Not so good, but why is it happening? Those simple, unpretentious discoveries are going to lead you to something; something great!

Life often appears to be an unwieldy beast fraught with challenges, oddities and absurdities. Many times there appears to be no sound explanation for why things happen. But, make no mistake, everything happens for a reason and whether that reason is positive or negative, it exists and is not beyond your ability to understand it. Your understanding, however, comes about as a result of a discovery; a discovery you can comprehend if you remain willing to look. I should add that the world will offer you many of the apparent reasons why, but if those reasons break down in logic at any point along the way, they’re probably not true. The truth is a cohesive whole with no holes in it (pun intended 😉 ) and the contradiction is a clue that you haven’t found the truth yet. God’s Word, the logos is flawlessly logical, but like any literary masterpiece requires more than a cursory reading. It’s worth your time to understand it.

Discovering the meaning of life is no more complicated than discovering the hidden world beneath the soil. All that’s required is a heart that wants to know and a mind that’s willing to pursue it. I know of no human being living who earnestly asked God for an understanding and never received it. Often the signposts show up, but habit man; I already know man, gives up on his quest in favor of the familiar. Familiarity certainly feels better, but it never finds the gold. The best fruit can only be found by going out on a limb!

Your life is important enough to take the time required to understand. God never intended for you to drift through life, wandering from one seemingly unrelated circumstance to the next. He wants you to know… The question is, do you?

Braylon Breeches is 8 now and has since dropped the “breeches” moniker. I think it’s time for me and him to go on a discovery hike. I know I need it…
