There is a voice inside of you, which is you, carrying out a conversation with you. Sometimes there is also a voice that sounds like you, but it is actually God communicating with you. (How thoughtful for it to sound like our voice. Imagine your response if it was a totally strange voice! – (I digress) The voice inside of you which is you can be easily influenced by what your mind perceives in the senses realm. In other words, some of those thoughts given voice originated outside of you, though you still did the thinking. These thoughts we think and the voice we hear communicates messages to our awareness. We then have a choice which voice we will follow. In life we all live in the midst of a spiritual competition. It’s a fight and it goes on every single day. The contest takes place in the arena of your mind. You win and lose right there before anything happens in the physical realm. You win by the voice you choose to follow and you also lose by the voice you choose to follow. As such, there is a real discernment required of you, like it or not. If you go with the flow and float listening to everything that comes up or if you have been deluded into thinking every thought that flashes across your mind is true, you won’t land where you hoped you might land. You cannot be passive in a fight. This old world is deeply submerged in wrong. It is run by evil. (How that happened is another story.) Everything around you (almost) has been cleverly designed to give you the wrong impression. Negativity rules the planet. So where does that leave you? It leaves you with a choice. What matters most is the voice you follow.
All of us engage in conversation with ourselves. We do both the talking and the listening. It’s not weird, it’s awareness. Things come up in our minds and we address them. We talk it over. This beautiful reasoning mind of ours is making distinctions and connecting dots. It never stops. Throughout a day thousands of little conversations occur. We are thinking beings, thinking things through. But, here’s the rub. Some conversations are not worth entering into. Remember this old world is ruled by evil. In some fascinating, yet undiscovered way, the evil of the world gains access to our minds. I don’t mean spirit possession or control. I mean the multitude of thoughts that assault us day by day. The invitations to consider and discuss. The wrong or scary ideas that frighten us and compel us to figure it out. The difficulties and challenges that surround us and make it seem like there is no other path. No other voice to choose. This, my friends, is the fight. This is the challenge. On guard! That is not to say that every thought is evil. Not by a mile. There are many thoughts we indulge that are highly beneficial. Some internal talks lead us to clarity and insight and peace. These thoughts come from another source. These thoughts are also invitations. Yet the consideration of them leads to further discovery and a deeper experience of life. There are only two forces in the fight, a million variations, but only two sources. One voice to indulge and one voice to dismiss. Evil cannot influence your life in a negative way without your cooperation. You cooperate by listening to and responding to the wrong voice. You end up answering the wrong questions. Then, like landing on a spiders web, the more you seek to extricate yourself, the worse you get tangled up. You took the bait. The only way off the hook is by disengaging from the conversation. Stop listening to and answering that voice. That wrong voice, like well designed bait, is hard to resist. Surely you’ve got to figure this thing out. But, you won’t be able to figure it out because it was nothing to begin with, except bait to set the hook. You need help in order to get off the hook and the first step is always to end the conversation. Stop listening to and responding to that voice.
Thankfully there is another voice. It is a voice that loves only and always. A voice that seeks to heal rather than to hurt. A voice grounded and based in truth that cannot lie. It is the reality of things absent the false voice. It is the solution to every problem, the answer to every question, the strength to overcome, the restoration and deliverance every person seeks. It is a voice that sees your suffering and desires to help you escape. It is the voice of God expressed through His Word and it is the voice you hear inside that tells you what you need to know. The more you indulge His voice, the better your life becomes, exponentially. It is the voice of kindness and gentleness and forgiveness and love. It is everything you ever wanted in your life, though you may not know that yet. And, as you engage His voice, meditate on His voice and reason according to His voice, the more you begin to recognize that wrong voice. Instead of blindly talking yourself down the same blind alleys, you begin to discern that there are some conversations you must not engage. Or said another way, trying to reason with a lie by talking with it already admits the possibility of that lie. The dice have been loaded in advance. To answer is to lose. To engage is to suffer defeat. To stop answering and to cease engaging is how you win. Turn your focus back to the right voice, the voice you can trust. He is the voice to follow and His voice will set you free.
You can win the contest that surrounds you day by day. You can win the fight. You do so by listening to and responding to the right voice. Oh it won’t be easy because the whole world is engulfed in that voice. And the more you engage that voice, the darker your perception of life becomes. The duller and more calloused your heart becomes. But, if you seek His voice, humble yourself to His voice, respond to His voice, the darkness must flee. Darkness cannot exist in the light. You are going to have a lot of conversations with yourself tomorrow. Many, many things will hit your mind. But, instead of traveling down the same tired paths, why not choose a different route? You are the one, the only one that can decide which voice you are going to follow and which voice you must ignore. You don’t have to engage evil other than to tell it the truth. Let that shit go Elsa and see how good you feel. Your life depends upon you following the right voice. Choose wisely.
